The Tarantula Lounge Chair

The Tarantula Lounge Chair, my very own creation that I designed way back when in my 2009, was exhibited in the Cebu X ‘Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation’ (CFIF) under Cebu International Furniture & Furnishings (CIFF) exhibition at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu, Philippines. I was one of the many students who was given a chance to make our creation come to life with the help of Furniture Companies being our sponsors. This lounge chair has a Modern Filipino theme and it is inspired by the Tarantula belonging to the from the Theraphosidae family of spiders. The legs are curved like the tarantulas’ and the backrest’s cushion is made of suede having the texture of the tarantula’s hairy body. Since it has a Filipino theme, native materials are being used. The seat and the legs are made of Rattan which is a kind of palm in the tribe Calamae. native to tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australasia. Each leg’s base is made of 5.0cm tubular steel, heated and curved to its’ desired shape. It was then wrapped with entwined Rattan. The backrest is made of coconut shells or husks and inside the hollow part is foam covered with brown suede fabric. For all the coconut shells to be connected, 1.0cm flat bars were screwed to connect one to the other.
